Bergbron Plaaskombuis en Padstal
About This Spot
Stepping into Bergbron Plaaskombuis en Padstal is like slipping through a quiet portal from the suburban bustle of Randburg into a serene countryside refuge. Nestled in the leafy surrounds of Blackheath, this spot invites you to slow down and savor the familiar rhythms of a rustic Afrikaans plaaskombuis. There’s a gentle, unhurried pace here that encourages you to breathe in the calm, whether you’re settling at a sun-dappled table outside or finding your nook inside the inviting, homely space.
The atmosphere carries a subtle warmth — a kind that feels like a shared secret among locals, wrapped in the comforting scent of fresh roosterkoek baking and the rich aroma of brewed coffee. It’s easy to forget the city is close by when the chatter hums softly over hearty plates and the clink of mugs filled with homemade ginger beer or the unique sweet tang of condensed milk coffee.
This is a place woven with memories and simple pleasures, where classic South African flavors are thoughtfully reimagined into generous, soulful portions. Whether it’s the nostalgic pull of a vetkoek filled with mince or the gentle spice of peri-peri chicken livers on fresh roosterkoek, each bite seems to tell a story of home, comfort, and community. The menu doesn’t rush you; it invites moments of discovery — of familiar tastes with unexpected little twists, or the joy of trying something completely new, like a gemmerbier or bullet coffee.
Friendly faces and relaxed service make every visit feel like a gathering of old friends. The setting itself, with its blend of indoor coziness and the calm of shaded outdoor seating, offers a welcome solace throughout the seasons. Whether you arrive early for breakfast or linger into a leisurely afternoon, there’s an unspoken sense that you’re part of something quietly special here — a cherished local spot where genuine connection and simple, honest food come naturally.

Great little restaurant situated in the leafy suburb of Bergbron. Makes you feel completely like you are not in Johannesburg at all. Lovely atmosphere and outside seating as well as inside seating for all times of the year. The food's size portions is generously sized with an affordable price and i had the periperi chicken livers on a roosterkoek. Loved it! The coffee can be served in a regular or a big sized cup! Waiters are friendly! Parking limited but understandable, not a huge place but quality over quantity! Will recommend for breakfast or brunch! Also a tractor to pose on for pictures and 1 or 2 things for the kids to keep themselves busy.

Beauty and serenity surround you. We attended an Orchid workshop run by Claudette from Marvellous Orchids. Johan, the owner from Bergbron Plaaskombuis is the perfect host, making sure he takes a selfie of himself before taking group pics .

A true hidden gem! Bergbron Plaaskombuis delivers egte Afrikaans plaasgeregte right in the suburbs. From their comforting melkkos to perfectly made vetkoek and fresh roosterkoek, every dish feels like a taste of home. The relaxed, country-style atmosphere makes it easy to forget you’re still in the city, and the fact that they serve alcohol is a big plus. Friendly service, hearty portions, and that unmistakable plaas-kombuis charm. Highly recommended!

Amazing place! Everything was 5 star. The food quality and size of the portions were top notch. I couldn't believe how much food we got for the cheap prices. Will definitely return

What a lovely little gem, always drove past and today decided to pay a visit. Sooooo homey, with friendly and fast service. Has inside seating with beautiful oldenday decorations and a fireplace, and outside seating with a cole stove for heat . You really get the plaas feeling with the hearty food and cosy setting. They also serve alchohol, breakfast and lunch. Dog friendly with a doggy treat menu, how cute. Has inside and street parking. Prices are reasonable and food looks great, I only had the coffee and rusks, but the other diners seemed very happy with their old school meals. A must visit
